An Electro-optical Kerr Device Based on 2D Boron Nitride Liquid Crystals for Solar-blind Communications.

Achieving light modulation in the spectral range of 200 - 280 nm is a prerequisite for solar-blind ultraviolet communication, where current technologies mainly based on the electro-luminescent self-modulation of the ultraviolet source. External light modulation through the electro-birefringence control of liquid crystal devices has shown success in the visible-to-infrared regions. However, the poor stability of conventional liquid crystals against ultraviolet irradiation and their weak electro-optical response make it challenging to modulate ultraviolet light. Here, we demonstrate an external ultraviolet light modulator using two-dimensional boron nitride liquid crystal. It exhibits robust ultraviolet stability and a record-high specific electro-optical Kerr coefficient of 5.1×10 m V , being three orders of magnitude higher than those of other known electro-optical media that are transparent (or potentially transparent) in the ultraviolent spectral range. The sensitive response enables us to fabricate transmissive and stable UV-C electro-optical Kerr modulators for solar-blind ultraviolet light. We also demonstrate an M-ary coding array with high transmission density for solar-blind ultraviolet communication. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Dual Enhancement of Phosphorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence through Entropically Driven Self-Assembly of a Platinum(II) Complex.

Addressing the dual enhancement of circular polarization (glum) and luminescence quantum yield (QY) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) systems poses a significant challenge. In this study, we present an innovative strategy utilizing the entropically driven self-assembly of amphiphilic phosphorescent platinum(II) complexes (L-Pt) with tetraethylene glycol chains, resulting in unique temperature dependencies. The entropically driven self-assembly of L-Pt leads to a synergistic improvement in phosphorescence emission efficiency (QY was amplified from 15% at 25 °C to 53% at 60 °C) and chirality, both in the ground state and the excited state (glum value has been magnified from 0.04 × 10-2 to 0.06) with increasing temperature. Notably, we observed reversible modulation of phosphorescence and chirality observed over at least 10 cycles through successive heating and cooling, highlighting the intelligent control of luminescence and chiroptical properties by regulating intermolecular interactions among neighboring L-Pt molecules. Importantly, the QY and glum of the L-Pt assembly in solid state were measured as 69% and 0.16 respectively, representing relatively high values compared to most self-assembled CPL systems. This study marks the pioneering demonstration of dual thermo-enhancement of phosphorescence and CPL and provides valuable insights into the thermal effects on high-temperature and switchable CPL materials.

Iron Status and Risk of Heart Disease, Stroke, and Diabetes: A Mendelian Randomization Study in European Adults.

The relevance of iron status biomarkers for coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), ischemic stroke (IS), and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is uncertain. We compared the observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses of iron status biomarkers and hemoglobin with these diseases.

Flexible light-stimulated artificial synapse based on detached (In,Ga)N thin film for neuromorphic computing.

Because of wide range of applications, the flexible artificial synapse is an indispensable part for next-generation neural morphology computing. In this work, we demonstrate a flexible synaptic device based on a lift-off (In,Ga)N thin film successfully. The synaptic device can mimic the learning, forgetting, and relearning functions of biological synapses at both flat and bent states. Furthermore, the synaptic device can simulate the transition from short-term memory to long-term memory successfully under different bending conditions. With the high flexibility, the excitatory post-synaptic current of the bent device only shows a slight decrease, leading to the high stability. Based on the experimental conductance for long-term potentiation and depression, the simulated three-layer neural network can achieve a high recognition rate up to 90.2%, indicating that the system comprising of flexible synaptic devices could have a strong learning-memory capability. Therefore, this work has a great potential for the development of wearable intelligence devices and flexible neuromorphic systems.

Highly coordinative molecular cobalt-phthalocyanine electrocatalyst on an oxidized single-walled carbon nanotube for efficient hydrogen peroxide production.

HO production the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e ORR) offers a potential alternative to the current anthraquinone method owing to its efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, it is necessary to determine the structures of electrocatalysts with cost-effectiveness and high efficiency for future industrialization demand. Herein, a supramolecular catalyst composed of cobalt-phthalocyanine on a near-monodispersed and oxidized single-walled carbon nanotube (CoPc/o-SWCNT) was synthesized a solution self-assembly method for catalyzing the 2e ORR for HO electrosynthesis. Benefiting from the enhanced intermolecular interaction by introducing oxygen functional grups on o-SWCNTs, the oxidation states of single-atom Co sites were tuned the formation of two extra Co-O bonds. Coupled with structural characterizations, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the depressed d-band center of the Co site regulated by two axially-bridged O atoms gives rise to a suitable binding strength of oxygen intermediates (*OOH) to favor the 2e ORR. Thus, the CoPc-6wt%/o-SWCNT-2 catalyst with optimized synthetic parameters delivers competitive 2e ORR performance for HO electrosynthesis in a neutral electrolyte (pH = 7), including enhanced HO generation, satisfactory molar selectivity of ∼83-95% and long-period stability (75 h) in H-cell measurement. Moreover, it could also be boosted to show a high current of 45 mA cm, recorded turnover frequency of 25.3 ± 0.5 s and maximum HO production rate of 5.85 mol g h with a continuous HO accumulation of 1.2 wt% in a flow-cell device, which outperformed most of the reported neutral-selective nonprecious metal single-atom catalysts.

Novel strategy for depolymerization of avermectin fermentation residue to value-added amino acid product.

Avermectin fermentation residue (AFR) is rich in proteins, which can be depolymerized to value-added amino acids for in-plant reuse. The hydrochloric acid (HCl) hydrolysis is performed and investigated under different conditions, including HCl concentration, solid-liquid ratio, temperature, and time. The hydrolysis degree (HD) of 67.7% can be achieved. The empirical correlation of HD is established with a good practicability to control the HD and predict the experimental conditions. Solid-liquid reaction is confirmed to be dominant during the hydrolysis process. There are 17 kinds of amino acids in the hydrolysate, benefiting the reuse. Avermectin is not detected in the hydrolysate and AFR, and the mass of AFR is reduced by 53.8 wt%. This work provides a novel strategy for the environmentally friendly treatment and meanwhile the resource recovery of AFR.
