Efficient scald-preventing enabled by robust polyester fabrics with hot water repellency and water impalement resistance.Scald is a kind of common injury for human beings caused by contacting with hot liquids and/or vapor. Herein, we report the preparation of an advanced fabric for efficient scald-preventing by dip-coating a common polyester fabric in a hexadecyl polysiloxane (HD-POS) aqueous suspension, which was synthesized via a waterborne and nonfluorinated approach. Thanks to the hierarchical micro-/nanostructure of the fabric, stable bonding of the compact HD-POS layer on the polyester microfibers, and inherent high stability and elasticity of HD-POS, the fabric features excellent hot water repellency even for dynamic boiling water with a high water impalement resistance of up to 5 grades according to the water repellency grade test. In addition, the fabric shows extraordinary mechanical stability, e.g., its superhydrophobicity remained nearly unchanged after 200 cycles washing, 10,000 cycles Martindale abraison or 1000 cycles 100% streching and releasing. It also exhibits superior environmental robustness (117 d outdoor test) and chemical robustness (7 d immersion in 1 M HCl or NaOH solution, 60 min ultrosonication in both water and anchol immersion) in various harsh conditions. By applying as an advanced fabric for efficient scald-preventing, it can avoid direct contact of hot water and vapor with rat skin by preventing penetration of hot water and most of vapor. It could also significantly reduce heat conduction and radiation to rat skin by reducing contact time of hot water with the fabric (decreased 10 s more quickly than the pristine fabric to 60 °C when encountering 100 mL of 92 °C water). As a result, the fabric in contact with the skin keeps dry and the fabric temperature is much lower than that of the pristine fabric once encountering hot water, thus showing great potentials as an advanced fabric for efficient scald-preventing applications.

Contamination profiles and health risks of PFASs in groundwater of the Maozhou River basin.Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a group of chemicals with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, but little is known about the contamination of PFASs in groundwater and their linkage to surface water. Here we investigated the occurrence of PFASs in groundwater and surface water at the Maozhou River basin in order to understand their contamination profiles and potential health risks. The results showed that total PFASs concentrations ranged from 9.9 to 592.2 ng/L, 50.2-339.9 ng/L and 3.7-74.3 ng/g in groundwater, river water and sediment, respectively. The detection frequencies of C4-C8 chains (C-C) PFASs were higher than C9-C14 chains PFASs in the river and groundwater. Statistical analysis showed an obvious correlation between the major contaminants in the river and those in the groundwater, indicating the potential linkage of PFASs in the groundwater to the surface water. The wastewater indicator found in groundwater suggested domestic wastewater was only one of the source for the PFASs in the river and groundwater of Maozhou River basin. Moreover, human health risk assessment showed low risks from the PFASs to the residents by drinking groundwater.

Characterization of Equivalent Black Carbon at a regional background site in Central Europe: Variability and source apportionment.Characterizing Black Carbon (BC) at regional background areas is important for better understanding its impact on climate forcing and health effects. The variability and sources of Equivalent Black Carbon (EBC) in PM (atmospheric particles with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 10 μm) have been investigated during a 5-year measurement period at the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice (NAOK), Czech Republic. Ground based measurements were performed from September 2012 to December 2017 with a 7-wavelength aethalometer (AE31, Magee Scientific). The contributions of fossil fuel (EBC) and biomass burning (EBC) were estimated using the aethalometer model. Seasonal, diurnal and weekly variations of EBC were observed that can be related to the sources fluctuations and transport characteristic of pollutants predominantly associated with regional air masses recirculating over the Czech Republic and neighboring countries. The absorption Ångström exponent (α-value) estimated in summer (1.1 ± 0.2) was consistent with reported value for traffic, while the mean highest value (1.5 ± 0.2) was observed in winter due to increased EBC accounting for about 50% of the total EBC. This result is in agreement with the strong correlation between EBC and biomass burning tracers (levoglucosan and mannosan) in winter. During this season, the concentrations of EBC and Delta-C (proxy for biomass burning) reached a maximum in the evening when increasing emissions of wood burning in domestic heating devices (woodstoves/heating system) is expected, especially during the weekend. The diurnal profile of EBC displays a typical morning peak during the morning traffic rush hour and shows a decreasing concentration during weekends due to lower the traffic emission.

Headspace gas chromatographic method for antimicrobial screening: Minimum inhibitory concentration determination.The headspace gas chromatographic method has been widely used to detect volatile metabolites to reflect the growth state of microorganisms, however, it has never been used for the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration in antibacterial drugs. This paper reports a new method for evaluating the antimicrobial activity of drugs by measuring the amount of CO produced by bacterial metabolism after treatment with drugs. According to the amount of CO produced by bacterial metabolism, a proper amount of bacterial liquid is selected and added to a drug-containing culture medium as compared with bacteria without drugs in parallel. The amount of CO produced by bacteria is measured by using a headspace gas chromatograph coupled with a thermal conductivity detector to measure the bacteriostasis rate and the minimum bacteriostasis concentration of the tested drug, so as to evaluate its antibacterial activity. The accuracy of this method was verified by comparison with the standard method (the OD method), which indicated that the precision was less than 3 % (expressed by relative standard deviation), the inhibition rate (R = 0.968) was consistent with the reference method above. This method is simple in operation and can avoid the error caused by the properties of the sample such as volatility, solubility and color in the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. It is suitable for the determination of antibacterial activity of drugs, especially natural drugs.

Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus interleukin 21 induces inflammatory response and plays a vital role in the immune defense against bacterial pathogen.Interleukin (IL)-21 is a pleiotropic cytokine and plays a vital role in immunity. In the current study, we examined the immune function of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus IL-21 (PoIL-21). PoIL-21 shares moderate (25.17%-46.25%) sequence identities with other teleost IL-21. PoIL-21 expression occurred in multiple tissues, especially intestine, and was regulated by bacterial infection in a time dependent manner. PoIL-21 was secreted by peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) upon LPS stimulation. Recombinant PoIL-21 (rPoIL-21) bound to a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and inhibited the growth of the fish bacterial pathogen Streptococcus iniae. rPoIL-21 also interacted with PBL, resulting in enhanced cell proliferation, ROS production, and expression of IL-1β, TNF-α, CD8β, T-bet, PoIL-21, PoIL-21 receptor, and STAT. Consequently, the presence of rPoIL-21 significantly reduced bacterial infection in PBL. In vivo study showed that rPoIL-21 upregulated the expression of inflammatory cytokines and PoIL-21. Taken together, these results indicate that PoIL-21 is an inducible, secreted cytokine with a broad range of binding capacities and plays an important role in the regulation of anti-bacterial immunity.

ICG-Conjugated and I-Labeled Polymeric Micelles with High Biosafety for Multimodality Imaging-Guided Photothermal Therapy of Tumors.Noninvasive multimodality imaging-guided precision photothermal therapy (PTT) is proven to be an effective strategy for tumor theranostics by integrating diagnostics and therapeutics in one nanoplatform. In this study, indocyanine green (ICG)-conjugated and radionuclide iodine-125 ( I)-labeled polymeric micelles (PEG-PTyr( I)-ICG PMs) are strategically prepared by the self-assembly of the ICG-decorated amphiphilic diblock polymer poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-tyrosine- I)-(indocyanine green) (PEG-PTyr( I)-ICG). The as-prepared polymeric micelles exhibit favorable biocompatibility, excellent size/photo/radiolabel stability, a high-photothermal conversion efficiency, a passive tumor-targeting ability, and a fluorescence (FL)/photoacoustic (PA)/single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging property. After tail intravenous injection, the polymeric micelles can efficiently accumulate at the tumor site and present comprehensive FL/PA/SPECT images with a high sensitivity, excellent spatial resolution, and unlimited tissue penetration under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Upon 808 nm laser irradiation, the subsequent precision PTT of tumors can be achieved with minimal cumulative side effects. Thus, this capable multifunctional nanoplatform with simple components and preparation procedures for FL/PA/SPECT multimodality imaging-guided PTT can be a potential candidate for clinical tumor theranostics.

Manganese Oxide Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, and Theranostic Applications.Despite the comprehensive applications in bioimaging, biosensing, drug/gene delivery, and tumor therapy of manganese oxide nanomaterials (MONs including MnO , MnO, Mn O , Mn O , and MnO ) and their derivatives, a review article focusing on MON-based nanoplatforms has not been reported yet. Herein, the representative progresses of MONs on synthesis, heterogene, properties, surface modification, toxicity, imaging, biodetection, and therapy are mainly introduced. First, five kinds of primary synthetic methods of MONs are presented, including thermal decomposition method, exfoliation strategy, permanganates reduction method, adsorption-oxidation method, and hydro/solvothermal. Second, the preparations of hollow MONs and MON-based composite materials are summarized specially. Then, the chemical properties, surface modification, and toxicity of MONs are discussed. Next, the diagnostic applications including imaging and sensing are outlined. Finally, some representative rational designs of MONs in photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, chemodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, radiotherapy, magnetic hyperthermia, chemotherapy, gene therapy, starvation therapy, ferroptosis, immunotherapy, and various combination therapy are highlighted.

Nacre-Inspired Mineralized Films with High Transparency and Mechanically Robust Underwater Superoleophobicity.Underwater superoleophobic materials have shown promising applications in various fields, especially in the highly frequent oil-spill accidents. However, the transparency and mechanical properties of existing underwater superoleophobic materials are generally mutually exclusive. In this work, a transparent and mechanically robust underwater superoleophobic film is presented by combining superspreading and biomineralization. Unlike the conventional hydrogel-based materials, the transparent mineralized film exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties, which lead to a robust underwater superoleophobicity and an ultralow oil adhesion. Such a bioinspired mineralized film can be coated on various transparent supporting materials such as glass, polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and polypropylene (PP), showing promising applications in various fields, such as goggles, underwater cameras, and submarines.

Facile synthesis of a cyclodextrin-metal organic framework decorated with Ketjen Black and platinum nanoparticles and its application in the electrochemical detection of ofloxacin.A facile and novel method was developed to improve the conductivity of a cyclodextrin-metal organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) by modifying it with Ketjen Black (KB) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs). The structural morphology and composition of this PtNPs/KB/CD-MOFs nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental mapping, and Raman spectroscopy. The sensor was then evaluated for its ability to detect ofloxacin using cyclic voltammetry, and the results showed that the PtNPs/KB/CD-MOF had high sensitivity, satisfactory stability and good reproducibility. In addition, a great linear range was obtained with a concentration range of 0.08-100 μM and a low detection limit of 0.037 μM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the prepared electrochemical sensor could be successfully used to detect ofloxacin in serum.
