[Q fever in acute exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection].

We studied the effect of Q fever in acute exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection. The subjects consisted of 80 cases with acute exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection treated during the period from March 2002 till October 2004. Q fever was diagnosed using a PanBio Coxiella burnetii ELISA test kit. Two cases (2.5%) were positive for IgM in the acute stage, and were diagnosed as having acute infection by C. burnetii. They were elderly women with bronchiectasis, aged 76 and 82. They had no history of keeping cats or dogs, but the onset of acute exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection was June and March which is the breeding seasons for cats and dogs. Acute exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection were considerd to be a mixed infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (the 76-year-case) and Haemophilus influenzae (the 82-year-case). It is concluded that C. burnetii can induce exacerbation of chronic lower respiratory tract infection, their cases were considerd to be mixed infection with C. burnetii and other bacteria.

Proteinuria and immunoglobulinuria in neonatal dogs.

Samples of urine and serum from 45 newborn rottweiler puppies from six litters, and milk from their mothers, were taken 24, 48 and 72 hours and seven and 14 days after birth. Urine total protein and creatinine concentrations were determined and the ratios calculated. The immunoglobulin (Ig) concentrations of IgG, IgM and IgA in urine, serum and milk were determined with a commercially available elisa kit. The concentration of total protein in urine decreased from 1.64 to 0.29 mg/ml, and it and the ratio of total protein to creatinine in the urine of the neonatal puppies exceeded the normal values for adult dogs, but all the puppies developed normally. The average concentration of IgG in urine decreased from 0.0035 to 0.0003 mg/ml, that of IgA from 0.0035 to 0.0002 mg/ml and that of IgM from 0.0006 mg/ml to undetectable levels after two weeks. After two weeks, 47 per cent of the puppies had measurable levels of IgA and 70.6 per cent had measurable levels of IgG, but none of them had measurable levels of IgM.

Evaluation of a dot ELISA kit for measuring immunoglobulin M antibodies to canine parvovirus and distemper virus.

A dot ELISA for the detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to canine distemper virus (CDC) and canine parvovirus (CPV) was assessed. The titres of IgM antibodies to CDV and CPV in 100 dogs were measured by the Immunocomb ELISA kit and compared with the results derived from the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). There was a strong correlation between the results of the dot ELISA technique and the IFA (P < 0.001). The dot ELISA kit was also used to assess the changes in the levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies to CPV and CDV in 10 puppies vaccinated with a polyvalent vaccine. High levels of IgM antibodies to CPV were first detected seven days after they were vaccinated, and after nine days all the pups had high titres of IgG antibodies to CPV. High levels of IgM antibodies to CDV were detected after nine days and the highest average titres were recorded after 12 days. IgG antibodies to CDV were present from nine days after vaccination.

A comparative study of different methods for measurement of rheumatoid factor in dog serum.

An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique was developed and compared with two routinely used methods, latex agglutination and Rose-Waaler hemagglutination, for the measurement of Rheumatoid Factor (RF) in dog serum. The frequency of positive samples for IgM-RF was rather low, about 8-12% of the 460 dogs with different rheumatic disorders being classified as positive by these methods. It was further concluded that the latex agglutination test used in this study (Synbiotics CRF Kit) should be performed only on heat inactivated serum (56 degrees C for 30 minutes) thereby significantly reducing the frequency of weak, probably false, positive agglutination reactions. When this was considered, a significant correlation was obtained for the three different techniques for RF estimation in serum from normal control as well as rheumatic diseased dogs.
