Machine learning-assisted calibration of Hg sensors based on carbon nanotube field-effect transistors.

Nanomaterial-based electronic sensors have demonstrated ultra-low detection limits, down to parts-per-billion (ppb) or parts-per-trillion (ppt) concentrations. However, these extreme sensitivities also make them susceptible to signal saturation at higher concentrations and restrict their usage primarily to low concentrations. Here, we report machine learning techniques to create a calibration method for carbon nanotube-based field-effect transistor (FET) devices. We started with linear regression, followed by regression splines to capture the non-linearity in the data. Further improvements in model performance were obtained with regression trees. Finally we lowered the model variance and further boosted the model performance by introducing random forest. The resulting performance as measured by R was estimated to be 0.8260 using out-of-bag error. The methodology avoids saturation and extends the dynamic range of the nanosensors up to 12 orders of magnitude in analyte concentrations. Further investigations of the sensing mechanism include analysis of feature importance in each of the model we tested. Functionalized nanosensors demonstrate selective detection of Hg ions with detection limits 10 M, and maintain calibration to concentrations as high as 1 mM. Application of machine learning techniques to investigate which features in the FET signal maximally correlate with concentration changes provide valuable insight into the carbon nanotube sensing mechanism and assist in the rational design of future nanosensors.

Healthy Pediatric Athletes Have Significant Baseline Limb Asymmetries on Common Return-to-Sport Physical Performance Tests.

Return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in children is associated with a much higher risk (∼30%) of subsequent ACL injury than in adults. Most RTS testing protocols use a limb symmetry index (LSI) ≥90% on physical performance tests (PPTs) to assess an athlete's readiness for sport. This assumes that, in a healthy state, the physical performances across both lower extremities are and should be equal.

Chronic exposure to IL-6 induces a desensitized phenotype of the microglia.

When the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS) is altered, microglial cells become activated displaying a wide range of phenotypes that depend on the specific site, the nature of the activator, and particularly the microenvironment generated by the lesion. Cytokines are important signals involved in the modulation of the molecular microenvironment and hence play a pivotal role in orchestrating microglial activation. Among them, interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine described in a wide range of pathological conditions as a potent inducer and modulator of microglial activation, but with contradictory results regarding its detrimental or beneficial functions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of chronic IL-6 production on the immune response associated with CNS-axonal anterograde degeneration.

Interaction between Pain, Disability, Mechanosensitivity and Cranio-Cervical Angle in Subjects with Cervicogenic Headache: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The relationship between the forward head posture and mechanosensitivity in subjects with a cervicogenic headache (CGH) remains uncertain. The aim of the study was to evaluate if there was a relationship between the tissue mechanosensitivity and cranio-cervical angle (CCA) that was moderated by pain intensity and/or disability in subjects with CGH. A convenience sample of 102 subjects was recruited. The CCA was measured with photographs, using a postural assessment software. The pain intensity was measured with a visual analogue scale (VAS), and the disability was measured with the Northwick Park Questionnaire. The pressure pain threshold (PPT) was measured at the spinous process of C2, the upper trapezius and splenius capitis muscles, and the median nerve. Simple moderation multiple regression analyses were constructed. There was a positive relationship between PPT at C2 and CCA, but a nonsignificant relationship for the PPT measured at the muscles and median nerve. The effect of PPT at C2 over CCA was moderated by pain intensity (R = 0.17; R change = 0.06; < 0.05) but not disability. The Johnson-Neyman analysis revealed a cut-off point for the statistical significance of 4.66 cm in VAS. There seems to be a positive relationship between PPT at C2 and CCA, which is positively moderated by pain intensity in subjects with CGH.

Highly sensitive determination of heavy metals in water prior to and after remediation using Citrofortunella Microcarpa.

A highly sensitive bismuth/silver nanoparticles/Nafion-modified screen-printed graphene electrode was fabricated and was utilized for the detection of trace lead (Pb) concentrations in river water samples prior to and after remediation using calamansi (Citrofortunella Microcarpa) rinds in different forms viz., ground sun-dried, dry-ashed, food-grade pectin, fractionated pectin, and alcohol insoluble solids-extracted pectin. All these forms of pectin remediated Pb in the water samples. Hence, this novel method of using calamansi rinds in different forms is an effective method for the removal of lead in water. The electrode was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry which confirmed the presence of the modifiers on the electrode surface. The limit of detection of 267.6 ppt and the strong linear relationship between the Pb concentration and the anodic current response (R = 0.999) were obtained under optimized experimental conditions and parameters.
