[Behavioural and physiological indicators of pain and distress in calves following tail docking].

According to the German law on animal welfare (§ 6, section 3, No. 3), the prophylactic amputation of beef calves' tail end using elastic rubber rings requires authorities' permission. Removal of the tail end is performed in order to avoid tail tip necrosis. Other invasive management procedures such as dehorning and castration are associated with pain reactions and stress in calves. Also, more proximal docking of the tail between 2 vertebrae has a proven impact on the animal's wellbeing. However, little is known concerning the occurrence of pain and stress during docking the soft tail tip in beef calves. For this reason, this pilot study aimed to evaluate pain reactions of calves during tail docking using rubber rings.

Importance of microRNAs in Skin Oncogenesis and Their Suitability as Agents and Targets for Topical Therapy.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, with rapidly increasing incidence and consistent mortality. Skin cancer encompasses melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, which in turn is mainly divided into cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Small noncoding micro-RNAs (miRNAs) regulate protein expression after transcription and play a role in the development and progression of skin cancer. Deregulated expression of miRNAs in skin cancer is associated with cell proliferation, angiogenesis, metastasis, apoptosis, immune response, and drug resistance. Specific patterns of miRNAs in specific skin cancer types can be used as diagnostic markers. For therapeutic purposes, both miRNA and chemically modified variants thereof as well as miRNA antagonists (antagomiRs) or RNA inhibitors may be applied topically. Due to their specific physicochemical properties, physical or chemical diffusion promoters are used with varying degrees of success. There is no question by now that such preparations have a high potential for the treatment of epithelial skin tumors in particular.

Magneto-transport phenomena of type-I multi-Weyl semimetals in co-planar setups.

Having the chiral anomaly induced magneto-transport phenomena extensively studied in single Weyl semimetal (WSM) as characterized by topological charge n=1, we here address the transport properties in the context of multi-Weyl semimetals (m-WSMs) where n>1. Using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism with the relaxation time approximation, we investigate several intriguing transport properties such as longitudinal magneto-conductivity (LMC), planar Hall conductivity (PHC), thermo-electric coefficients (TECs) and planar Nernst coefficient (PNC) for m-WSMs in the co-planar setups with the external magnetic field, electric field, and temperature gradient. Starting from the low-energy model, we show analytically that at zero temperature both LMC and PHC vary cubically with topological charge as n^3 while the finite temperature (T≠ 0) correction is proportional to (n+n^2)T^2. Interestingly, we find that both the longitudinal and transverse TECs vary quadratically with topological charge as n^2 and the PNC is found to vary non-monotonically as a function of n. Our study hence clearly suggests that the inherent properties of m-WSMs indeed show up distinctly through the chiral anomaly and the chiral magnetic effect induced transport coefficients in two different setups. Moreover, in order to obtain an experimentally realizable picture, we simultaneously verify our analytical findings through the numerical calculations using the lattice model of m-WSMs.
