Synthesis of Pt Double-Walled Nanoframes with Well-Defined and Controllable Facets.

In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis of morphologically complex nanoframes wherein a mixture of frames and thin solid planes, which we refer to as walled-nanoframes, are present in a single particle. By applying multiple chemical steps including shape evolution of Au nanocrystals and controlling chemical potential of solution for selective deposition, we successfully designed a variety of Pt nanoframes including Pt cuboctahedral nanoframes and Pt single-walled nanoframes. The rationale for on-demand chemical steps with well-faceted Au overgrowth allowed for the synthesis of double-walled nanoframes where two Pt single-walled nanoframes are concentrically overlapped in a single entity with a clearly discernible gap between the two nanoframes. Given the coexistence of an open structure of nanoframe and thin plates within one entity, the double-walled nanoframes showed a dramatic increase in catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction, acting as high-surface area, carbon-free, and volume-compact nanocatalysts.

Surface Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers: Generation, Detection, and Applications.

ConspectusDuring surface plasmon-mediated light-matter interactions, external energies on plasmonic metal nanostructures undergo energy dissipation via elastic e-e scattering, radiative luminescence, and nonradiative processes such as thermal relaxation (phonon) and electronic excitation (electron-hole pairs). In this process, surface plasmon decays dominantly through nonradiative recombination when the metal is smaller than 25 nm, forming hot carriers, including hot electrons and hot holes, with high kinetic energy of 1-3 eV. Although the ultrafast dynamics of hot carriers are on time scales ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds, these fast-disappearing hot carriers can be collected as the steady-state photocurrent or chemicurrent by adopting the metal-semiconductor (M-S)-based platform for detecting hot carrier flow. Plasmonic hot carriers, especially as they convert to an electrochemical signal, are a promising topic, and their energy conversion mechanisms are being actively studied in the fields of renewable energy, optoelectronics, and photocatalysis. Recent studies have demonstrated that these hot carriers can both improve the performance of solar energy conversion and control the catalytic activity or selectivity by directly participating in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) reaction.In this Account, we describe the inherent relationship between hot carriers and surface plasmon as well as what role hot carriers play throughout the catalytic reaction. The recent experimental work and the theoretical analysis of in situ hot carrier generation on Au nanostructures were conducted with photoconductive atomic force microscopy and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, respectively. We highlight the recent nanoscale visualization of hot carrier flow occurring through light-matter interactions and that the localized surface plasmon field surrounding the Au nanostructure leads to boosted hot carrier generation. In addition, we highlight the recent demonstration that plasmonic hot carriers prolong the lifetime of photoexcited carriers in the MAPbI/Au/TiO hybrid nanodiode by the synergistic effect between plasmonic Au and perovskites. From this work, the solar-to-electron conversion performance of this nanodiode significantly increases due to the amplification of light absorption, which helps to design hybrid platforms for efficient hot carrier photovoltaics. We discuss the application of surface plasmon-driven hot electron generation, including hot electron-based photovoltaic devices and photocatalysts. We highlight the recent photoelectrochemical measurements on the Au/p-GaN heterostructures that are controlled by participating plasmonic hot carriers in the water splitting reaction. Furthermore, controlling the flow of both hot electrons and holes by developing hybrid platform configurations for hot carrier applications has promising opportunities for regulating the catalytic activities of hot carrier-based photocatalysis and improving the photoconversion efficiency of hot carrier-based optoelectronic devices.

Toward Quantitative Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering with Plasmonic Nanoparticles: Multiscale View on Heterogeneities in Particle Morphology, Surface Modification, Interface, and Analytical Protocols.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides significantly enhanced Raman scattering signals from molecules adsorbed on plasmonic nanostructures, as well as the molecules' vibrational fingerprints. Plasmonic nanoparticle systems are particularly powerful for SERS substrates as they provide a wide range of structural features and plasmonic couplings to boost the enhancement, often up to >10-10. Nevertheless, nanoparticle-based SERS is not widely utilized as a means for reliable quantitative measurement of molecules largely due to limited controllability, uniformity, and scalability of plasmonic nanoparticles, poor molecular modification chemistry, and a lack of widely used analytical protocols for SERS. Furthermore, multiscale issues with plasmonic nanoparticle systems that range from atomic and molecular scales to assembled nanostructure scale are difficult to simultaneously control, analyze, and address. In this perspective, we introduce and discuss the design principles and key issues in preparing SERS nanoparticle substrates and the recent studies on the uniform and controllable synthesis and newly emerging machine learning-based analysis of plasmonic nanoparticle systems for quantitative SERS. Specifically, the multiscale point of view with plasmonic nanoparticle systems toward quantitative SERS is provided throughout this perspective. Furthermore, issues with correctly estimating and comparing SERS enhancement factors are discussed, and newly emerging statistical and artificial intelligence approaches for analyzing complex SERS systems are introduced and scrutinized to address challenges that cannot be fully resolved through synthetic improvements.

Impact of Covid-19 on informal employment: A case study of women domestic workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

COVID-19 indiscriminately impacted all the segments of the global society. Due to the unstructured job market, women in the informal sector were at high risk to experience the adverse effects of the pandemic. This paper aims to explore the impact of COVID-19 on women domestic workers and their families. Semi structured interviews conducted with fifty-four women domestic workers in three districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan were analyzed in five themes: disruption caused by lockdown, loss of livelihood, economic hardships, social support mechanism, and challenges faced during the pandemic. The study underlines that the pandemic left severe impacts on access to basic services, employment, food security at household level and pattern of expenditures. The plummeting economic activities led to sudden drops in earnings that forced families to sell their assets and incur debts. Respondents lamented over the social support system and considered it a necessary but not sufficient condition for uplifting the lives of the poor. Strains in marital relationships led to stress, anxiety and domestic violence among families. The utmost concern was the restoration of economic activities and urgent policy interventions to strengthen social safety measures for the vulnerable segments of society.

Oxidative Stress-Induced Male Infertility: Role of Antioxidants in Cellular Defense Mechanisms.

Male infertility is linked to several environmental and mutagenic factors. Most of these factors, i.e., lifestyle, radiations, and chemical contaminations, work on the fundamental principles of physics, chemistry, and biology. Principally, it may induce oxidative stress (OS) and produce free radicals within the cells. The negative effect of OS may enhance the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in male reproductive organs and impair basic functions in a couple's fertility. Evidence suggests that infertile men have significantly increased ROS levels and a reduced antioxidant capacity compared with fertile men. Although, basic spermatic function and fertilizing capacity depend on a delicate balance between physiological activity of ROS and antioxidants to protect from cellular oxidative injury in sperm, that is essential to achieve pregnancy. The ideal oxidation-reduction (REDOX) equilibrium requires a maintenance of a range of ROS concentrations and modulation of antioxidants. For this reason, the chapter focuses on the effects of ROS in sperm functions and the current concepts regarding the benefits of medical management in men with diminished fertility and amelioration of the effect to improve sperm function. Also, this evidence-based study suggests an increasing rate of infertility that poses a global challenge for human health, urging the need of health care professionals to offer a correct diagnosis, comprehension of the process, and an individualized management of the patients.
