Keratoplasty is considered the most frequently performed type of transplantation in humans. Traditionally, penetrating keratoplasty has been the most common procedure. However, over the last 15 years, the importance of posterior lamellar keratoplasty has increased for the treatment of Fuchs endothelial dystrophy and bullous keratopathy. In Germany, based on national surveys, it was suggested that there was a trend towards lamellar keratoplasty.

The Current Understanding of Molecular Pathogenesis of Quantitative von Willebrand Disease, Types 1 and 3.

Von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most prevalent congenital bleeding disorder, arises from deficiencies in quantity or quality of von Willebrand factor (VWF). The quantitative deficiencies of VWF are considered to be either VWD type 1 (mild/moderate reduction of VWF) or type 3 (virtual absence of VWF). Following cloning of the VWF gene () in the 1980s, significant progress has been made in our understanding of the pathogenesis of VWD. The genetic basis of type 3 VWD is well defined. causative variations comprising predominantly null alleles have been identified in more than 85% of cases. In contrast, the molecular mechanisms in type 1 disease are only partially characterized. The sequence variations, including mostly missense alterations, are found in only approximately 65% of type 1 VWD patients. It appears that genetic elements outside of may contribute to the pathophysiology of type 1 VWD. This review discusses in detail the current understandings of the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms causing quantitative deficiencies of VWF.

Skin malignancies are typically localised in areas of the head that are exposed to the sun. Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most frequent malignancies on the facial skin. Their incidence is raising - due to demographic changes. As regards strategies for resection and reconstruction, the eyelids and the periorbital region are extremely complex and have to be treated in an interdisciplinary context. The aim of the present investigation was to analyse the results of interdisciplinary treatment of periorbital and eyelid non-melanotic malignoma.

[Periocular Necrobiotic Xanthogranuloma with Mono- and Biclonal Gammopathy].

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma is a very rare disease with granulomatous lesions of the skin with possible association with paraproteinemia. We report two cases of orbital necrobiotic xanthogranuloma in patients with mono/biclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Both patients underwent successful conservative treatment.

What We Can Find Beyond the Classic Neuroimaging Findings of Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome?

In 1947, Zika virus (ZIKV) was first discovered in Monkeys, in Zika Forest, in Uganda, Africa. Five years later, (1952) the first human Zika infection was detected in Nigeria, Africa. After this date, only sporadic cases happened, until the first 3 epidemics occurred, all outside Africa. The first epidemic was in Yap Island in 2007, the second in French Polynesia in 2013, and the third in 2015 in the northeast of Brazil, and then the spread to the Americas in 2015 and 2016. However, it was only after the epidemic in the northeast of Brazil, in the first half of 2015, that many babies were born with microcephaly in the second semester of that same year and in 2016. Until now, every year, some babies are still born with congenital ZIKV syndrome (CZVS).

First-principles study of stability, electronic structure and quantum capacitance of B-, N- and O-doped graphynes as supercapacitor electrodes.

The structures, stability, electronic properties, and quantum capacitance (Cq) of α-, β-, and γ-graphyne monatomic layer doped with B, N, and O atoms, respectively, were studied using density functional theory. Two different doping sites (i.e., D1 and D2) were considered. Upon replacement of C atoms in the three graphynes with B and N atoms, the structure of graphynes was minimally distorted. This change was mainly manifested as a negligible adjustment of bond length around the doped atoms and lattice constant. However, with O atom doping, the structural distortion of graphynes was obvious in majority of the cases. The doping of these atoms significantly improved the electronic state of the original graphyne near the Fermi level, thereby improving graphyne Cq. Pristine graphynes with large pores and specific surface area exhibited better Cq performance than that of pure graphene. Cq of graphynes doped with B, N, and O showed significant advantage over that of doped graphene, especially that of α-, β-, and γ-graphyne with B doping at D1 and α-graphyne with O doping at D1. Interestingly, β-graphyne with O doping at D2 showed a considerably symmetrical Cq. Thus, element-doped graphynes have great potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors.
