An origami electrical biosensor for multiplexed analyte detection in body fluids.We developed an affordable, highly sensitive, and specific paper-based microfluidic platform for fast multiplexed detections of important biomarkers in various body fluids, including urine, saliva, serum, and whole blood. The sensor array consisted of five individual sensing channels with various functionalities that only required a micro liter-sized sample, which was equally split into aliquots by the built-in paper microfluidics. We achieved the individual functionalizations of various bioreceptors by employing the use of wax barriers and 'paper bridges' in an easy and low-cost manner. Pyrene carboxylic acid-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (PCA/SWNTs) were deposited by quantitative inkjet printing with an optimal 3-dimensional semiconductor density on a paper substrate. Multiple antibodies were immobilized onto the SWNTs surface for highly sensitive and specific field-effect transistor (FET)/chemiresistor (CR) biosensors. We explored the optimal sensing conditions for the paper-based CR biosensor to achieve high sensitivities and specificities towards the target biomarker proteins (human serum albumin (HSA) and human immunoglobulin G (HIgG)) and achieved an ultralow detectable concentration of HSA and HIgG at 1.5 pM. Besides, origami folding was employed to simplify the fabrication process further. The sensing platform described in this work was cost-effective, semi-automated, and user-friendly. It demonstrated the capability of having multiple sensing functions in one paper-based microfluidic sensing platform. It envisioned the potential of a point-of-care device with full-analysis for practical diagnostics in an ASSURED (Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and robust, Equipment-free and Deliverable to end-users) fashion for a quick test of targets of interest.

Comprehensive assessment of bioactive glass and glass-ceramic scaffold permeability: experimental measurements by pressure wave drop, modelling and computed tomography-based analysis.Proper microstructural and transport properties are fundamental requirements for a suitable scaffold design and realization in tissue engineering applications. Scaffold microstructure (i.e. pore size, shape and distribution) and transport properties (i.e. intrinsic permeability), are commonly recognized as the key parameters related to the biological performance, such as cell attachment, penetration depth and tissue vascularization. While pore characteristics are relatively easy to asses, accurate and reliable evaluation of permeability still remains a challenge. In the present study, the microstructural properties of foam-replicated bioactive glass-derived scaffolds (basic composition 47.5SiO-2.5PO-20CaO-10MgO-10NaO-10KO mol.%) were determined as function of the sintering temperature within the range 600-850°C, identified on the basis of thermal analyses that were previously performed on the material. Scaffolds with total porosity between 55 and 84 vol.% and trabecular-like architecture were obtained, with pore morphological features varying according to the sintering temperature. Mathematical modelling, supported by micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) imaging, was implemented to selectively investigate the effect of different pore features on intrinsic permeability, which was determined by laminar airflow alternating pressure wave drop measurements and found to be within 0.051-2.811·10 m. The calculated effective porosity of the scaffolds was in the range of 46 to 66 vol.%, while the average pore diameter assessed by μ-CT varied between 220 and 780 μm, where the values in the lower range were observed for higher sintering temperatures (750-850°C). Experimental results were critically discussed by means of a robust statistical analysis. Finally, the complete microstructural characterization of the scaffolds was achieved by applying the general constitutive equation based on Forchheimer's theory.

Incomplete cocrystalization of ibuprofen and nicotinamide and its interplay with formation of ibuprofen dimer and/or nicotinamide dimer: A thermodynamic analysis based on DFT data.Cocrystallization of ibuprofen and nicotinamide in hot melt extrusion process has been subject of many studies addressing low ibuprofen bioavailability. However, it is observed that the process of cocrystal formation of ibuprofen and nicotinamide might be incomplete. We hypothesized that formation of dimers of ibuprofen-ibuprofen or dimers nicotinamide- nicotinamide might be the cause of such poor cocrystalization process by altering the phase behaviour of the mixture. This paper addresses the molecular thermodynamics of mixtures of ibuprofen and nicotinamide, with special focus on the possibility of formation of these dimers and their corresponding interplay with mixture phase behaviour. For this purpose, density functional theory calculations are used to calculate electron donor-acceptor sizes on each molecule and accordingly possible dimers of each molecule are analysed. The free energies and phase diagram are determined for (1) when a dimer is formed or (2) no dimer is formed, over a wide operating temperature range of 273.15 K-390 K. The binding and solvation energies are calculated to identify/rank dimers. Calculations showed that formation of dimers requires an energy input which can be accessible noting to the external heating in hot melt extrusion process. The calculated solvation energies of the dimers suggest that addition of liquid binder (water) can mitigate the risk of dimer formations. Addition of proper binder/excipient is an easy route to compensate such dimer formation and to engineer ibuprofen and nicotinamide cocrystallization behaviour.

Current and novel approaches to downstream processing of microalgae: A review.Biotechnological application of microalgae cultures at large scale has significant potential in the various fields of biofuels, food and feed, cosmetic, pharmaceutic, environmental remediation and water treatment. Despite this great potential application, industrialisation of microalgae culture and valorisation is still faced with serious remaining challenges in culture scale-up, harvesting and extraction of target molecules. This review presents a general summary of current techniques for harvesting and extraction of biomolecules from microalgae, their relative merits and potential for industrial application. The cell wall composition and its impact on microalgae cell disruption is discussed. Additionally, more recent progress and promising experimental methods and studies are summarised that would allow the reader to further investigate the state of the art. A final survey of energetic assessments of the different techniques is also made. Bead milling and high-pressure homogenisation seem to give clear advantages in terms of target high value compounds extraction from microalgae, with enzyme hydrolysis as a promising emerging technique. Future industrialisation of microalgae for high scale biotechnological processing will require the establishment of universal comparison-standards that would enable easy assessment of one technique against another.

Two-Weeks of Remote Ischemic Conditioning Improves Brachial Artery Flow Mediated Dilation in Chronic Stroke Survivors.Many stroke survivors have reduced cardiorespiratory fitness as a result of their stroke. Ischemic conditioning (IC) is a non-invasive, cost effective, easy to administer intervention that can be performed at home and has been shown to both improve motor function in stroke survivors and vascular endothelial function in healthy individuals. In this study we examined the effects of two weeks of remote IC (RIC) on brachial artery flow mediated dilation (FMD) in chronic stroke survivors. We hypothesized that FMD would be improved following RIC compared to a RIC Sham control group.

Simple, Effective, and Ecofriendly Strategy to Inhibit Droplet Bouncing on Hydrophobic Weed Leaves.Despite small-molecule surfactants and polymers being widely used as pesticide adjuvants to inhibit droplet bouncing and splashing, they still have intrinsic drawbacks either in the easy wind drift and evaporation, the unfavorable wettability, or the usage of nonrenewable resources. In this paper, we found that upon droplet impacting, 1D nanofibers assembled from natural glycyrrhizic acid (GL) could pin on the rough hydrophobic surface and delay the retraction rate of droplets effectively. Using GL as a tank-mixed adjuvant, the efficiency of glyphosate to control the weed growth was improved significantly in the field experiment, which addressed the dilemmas of current adjuvants elegantly. Our work not only provides a constructive way to overcome droplet bouncing but also prompted us to verify in future if all 1D nanofibers assembled from different small molecules can display similar control efficiencies.

Development of a pharmacy 'patient prioritization tool' for use in a Tertiary Paediatric Hospital.Pharmacists play an integral role in paediatric patient care by ensuring the safe and optimal use of medications. There are increasing demands on pharmacists' time and challenges to meet them within allocated resources, and therefore, it is important to ensure that resources are used efficiently. Patient prioritization tools for clinical pharmacists have been proposed via many studies, but are generally adult-based and/or have not been validated to confirm their effectiveness. The aim of this study was to create, pilot and validate a patient prioritization tool to be used by pharmacists providing clinical pharmacy services to paediatric patients.
