High-intensity ultrasound pretreatment influence on whey protein isolate and its use on complex coacervation with kappa carrageenan: Evaluation of selected functional properties.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS) treatment on whey protein isolate (WPI) molecular structure as a previous step for complex coacervation (CC) with kappa-carrageenan (KC) and its influence on CC functional properties. Protein suspension of WPI (1% w/w) was treated with an ultrasound probe (24 kHz, 2 and 4 min, at 50 and 100% amplitude), non HIUS pretreated WPI was used as a control. Coacervation was achieved by mixing WPI and KC dispersions (10 min). Time and amplitude of the sonication treatment had a direct effect on the molecular structure of the protein, FTIR-ATR analysis detected changes on pretreated WPI secondary structure (1600-1700 cm) after sonication. CC electrostatic interactions were detected between WPI positive regions, KC sulfate group (1200-1260 cm), and the anhydrous oxygen of the 3,6 anhydro-D-galactose (940-1066 cm) with a partial negative charge. After ultrasound treatment, a progressive decrease in WPI particle size (nm) was detected. Rheology results showed pseudoplastic behavior for both, KC and CC, with a significant change on the viscosity level. Further, volume increment, stability, and expansion percentages of CC foams were improved using WPI sonicated. Besides, HIUS treatment had a positive effect on the emulsifying properties of the CC, increasing the time emulsion stability percentage. HIUS proved to be an efficient tool to improve functional properties in WPI-KC CC.

Regulation of microRNAs in Inflammation-Associated Colorectal Cancer: A Mechanistic Approach.

The development of colorectal cancer (CRC) is a multi-stage process. The inflammation of the colon as in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD) is often regarded as the initial trigger for the development of CRC. Many cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and several interleukins (ILs) are known to exert proinflammatory actions, and inflammation initiates or promotes tumorigenesis of various cancers, including CRC through differential regulation of microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs). miRNAs can be oncogenic miRNAs (oncomiRs) or anti-oncomiRs/tumor suppressor miRNAs, and they play key roles during colorectal carcinogenesis. However, the functions and molecular mechanisms of regulation of miRNAs involved in inflammation-associated CRC are still anecdotal and largely unknown. Consolidating the published results and offering perspective solutions to circumvent CRC, the current review is focused on the role of miRNAs and their regulation in the development of CRC. We have also discussed the model systems adapted by researchers to delineate the role of miRNAs in inflammation-associated CRC.

Coronavirus is a group of viruses which causes diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, these family of viruses can cause the respiratory infections from mild form to fatal forms. SARS-CoV-2 is infectious in humans and world health organization has announced that Covid-19 as a pandemic disease. Tocilizumab is a biological agent which inhibits the cytokine, interleukin 6 (IL-6 inhibitor). As SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to the development of cytokine storm syndrome, the drug tocilizumab seems to have positive effect in patients with covid-19.

Computed tomography virtual endoscopy (CT-VE) is a non-invasive technique which allows visualisation of intraluminal surfaces by tridimensional reconstruction of air/soft tissues. Synthesis and crystallographic characterization of di-phenyl-amide rare-earth metal complexes (NPh)(THF) and [(PhN)(μ-NPh)].

Studies of the coordination chemistry between the di-phenyl-amide ligand, NPh, and the smaller rare-earth ions, = Y, Dy, and Er, led to the structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography of both solvated and unsolvated complexes, namely, tris-(di-phenyl-amido-κ)bis-(tetrahydro-furan-κ)yttrium(III), Y(NPh)(THF) or [Y(CHN)(CHO)], , and the erbium(III) (Er), , analogue, and bis-[μ-1κ:2(η)-di-phenyl-amido]-bis-[bis-(di-phenyl-amido-κ)yttrium(III)], [(PhN)Y(μ-NPh)] or [Y(CHN)], , and the dysprosium(III) (Dy), , analogue. The THF ligands of are modeled with disorder across two positions with occupancies of 0.627 (12):0.323 (12) and 0.633 (7):0.367 (7). Also structurally characterized was the tetra-metallic Er bridging oxide hydrolysis product, bis-(μ-di-phenyl-amido-κ:)bis-[μ-1κ:2(η)-di-phenyl-amido]-tetra-kis-(di-phenyl-amido-κ)di-μ-oxido-tetra-erbium(III) benzene disolvate, {[(PhN)Er(μ-NPh)](μ-O)}·(CH) or [Er(CHN)O]·2CH, . The structure was refined as a three-component twin with occupancies 0.7375:0.2010:0.0615.
