Real-time measurement of isometric peak torque and rate of torque development using a novel strength testing device: a validity and reliability study.

Isometric peak torque (PT) and rate of torque development (RTD) are important characteristics relevant to athletic performance. A novel device called the Dynamo Torque Analyzer calculates and displays real-time measurements of isometric PT and RTD. However, the ability of the Dynamo to provide valid and reliable isometric PT and RTD measurements similar to those of an isokinetic dynamometer remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the reliability and magnitude of isometric leg extension and flexion PT and RTD measurements between an isokinetic dynamometer and the Dynamo Torque Analyzer.

Carcinogen soil radon enrichment in a geothermal area: Case of Güzelçamlı-Davutlar district of Aydın city, western Turkey.

Radon gas is noble gas formed from the normal radioactive decay series of 238U. Uranium is present in almost all rocks but enriched in silica-rich rocks like granites, gneisses, schists, volcanics, pegmatites, migmatites. The study area extends over metamorphic, volcanic, and clastic sedimentary rocks. Soil radon was measured in 34 measuring points and its concentrations reach 3700 Bq/m. The mean values decrease due to seawater penetrations or to collections of atmospheric waters in a basin. Those water saturates the soil and prevents radon emanation and exhalation. The emanation of radon to the surface requires transporting agents. In geothermal fields, hot water or fluids take on this task. For that reason, geothermal fields can represent high soil radon. As radon was classified as a human carcinogen, our study area and whole Aydın province which has rich geothermal potential must be surveyed for public health.

Are facial emotion recognition tasks adequate for assessing social cognition in older people? A review of the literature.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a component of social cognition and important to interpersonal relations. Therefore, tasks have been developed to assess this skill in different population. Regarding older people, even healthy individuals have a poorer performance compared to rate of correct answers commonly used to assess such tasks. Perform a systematic review to analyze studies addressing the performance of healthy older adults on FER tasks compared to the 70% correct response rate commonly used for the creation of stimulus banks.

The epiphyseal secondary ossification center: Evolution, development and function.

Bone age is used widely by pediatricians to assess the skeletal maturity of a child and predict growth potential. This entails measuring the size of secondary ossification centers (SOCs), which develop with age in the ends of long bones, which are initially cartilaginous. However, little is presently known about the developmental biology, evolution and functional role of these skeletal elements. Here, we summarize the knowledge currently available in this area and discuss potential primary functions of the SOC.

Glucokinase in stellate ganglia cooperates with P2×3 receptor to develop cardiac sympathetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes rats.

Glucokinase (GCK) may be involved in inflammatory pathological changes, while the P2 × 3 receptor in the stellate ganglia (SG) is related to diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy. In this study, we explored the relationship between the upregulated GCK in SG and diabetic cardiac sympathy. The expression and location of GCK and P2 × 3 in SG of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats were assessed. Changes in cardiac function were determined by measuring blood pressure, sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate, and heart rate variability. P2 × 3 agonist-activated currents in isolated stellate ganglion neurons and cultured human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells were recorded using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. The upregulated expression of GCK in SG of T2DM rats was decreased after treatment with GCK short hairpin RNA (shRNA). GCK shRNA treatment also improved the blood pressure, sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate, and heart rate variability in T2DM rats. By contrast, the expression of P2 × 3 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) was lessened by GCK shRNA treatment. In addition, adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-activated currents in stellate ganglion neurons and HEK293 cells co-transfected with GCK and P2 × 3 receptor plasmids were reduced after GCK shRNA treatment. In T2DM rats, knockdown of GCK relieved the diabetic cardiac sympathy mediated by P2 × 3 receptor-involved upregulation of GCK in SG.
